Nearly 600 pages and still seemed to short。 This time it's two interlinked short stories。 One is an expansion of a piece Connolly serially published in 2020。 Enjoyed spending time with favored characters and legitimately creepy supernatural element。 Nearly 600 pages and still seemed to short。 This time it's two interlinked short stories。 One is an expansion of a piece Connolly serially published in 2020。 Enjoyed spending time with favored characters and legitimately creepy supernatural element。 。。。more

** I received a free copy of this book as a Goodreads giveaway winner **Rating this book, I was stuck between a 4 and a 5 star review, but since I really don't have much criticism, I went with the 5。Though they are described as "novellas," the two stories in this book are truly more like full novels。 This, coupled with the fact that the book is about 500 pages was rather off-putting to me, and I felt a lack of motivation to start the book。 I sure am glad I did。Having never read John Connolly bef ** I received a free copy of this book as a Goodreads giveaway winner **Rating this book, I was stuck between a 4 and a 5 star review, but since I really don't have much criticism, I went with the 5。Though they are described as "novellas," the two stories in this book are truly more like full novels。 This, coupled with the fact that the book is about 500 pages was rather off-putting to me, and I felt a lack of motivation to start the book。 I sure am glad I did。Having never read John Connolly before, I did not know what to expect。 His writing was easy to follow and descriptive enough to throw me into his world without boring me with excess details。 This made his novel(las?) a lot more enjoyable and less intimidating than initially expected。The Sisters Strange felt like more of a mystery, constantly questioning if the supernatural stories of a certain item was actually magical or just fiction。 The story stayed consistent until its satisfying, albeit predictable, conclusion。The Furies was my preferred story。 A tale of women scorned and fighting for their freedom from oppressive men, this story certainly one of real life terror。 Two different storylines overlapped slightly, both tales of revenge, but one completely free of all aspects of the supernatural and paranormal, while the other contained those elements as the basis of the plot。This was a nice little thriller read with a touch of the supernatural。 It was enjoyable and easy to read, making it ideal for an entertaining little book。 。。。more

Hmmmm。 This book, or books, seemed off from Connolly's other books in the series。 Maybe it's because, from what I can tell, it was originally issued as a serial - chapter at a time? The Furies, John Connolly’s latest novel, is actually two short novels: the titled novel and The Sisters Strange。 Both demonstrate his strengths: Charlie Parker himself with his code of behavior; Charlie’s various, and quite varied associates who offer a wide assortment of aid in his work; a deep knowledge of the inner workings of New England and its criminal underworld; that ever present, but varyingly used, supernatural world; and of course his personal history which has colored his entire adu The Furies, John Connolly’s latest novel, is actually two short novels: the titled novel and The Sisters Strange。 Both demonstrate his strengths: Charlie Parker himself with his code of behavior; Charlie’s various, and quite varied associates who offer a wide assortment of aid in his work; a deep knowledge of the inner workings of New England and its criminal underworld; that ever present, but varyingly used, supernatural world; and of course his personal history which has colored his entire adult life。To be continued…。Thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley。 。。。more

This review is for an ARC copy received from the publisher through NetGalley。In a new format for Connolly, The Furies contains two short novels rather than one long one。 In The Sisters Strange, Charlie Parker is hired by the suitor of one of the aforenamed women to investigate an ex-con named Raum Buker and former lover of both sisters who has returned to town and may be causing trouble for one or both of them。 Unbeknownst to any of them, Buker brings major baggage with him, as a ruthless collec This review is for an ARC copy received from the publisher through NetGalley。In a new format for Connolly, The Furies contains two short novels rather than one long one。 In The Sisters Strange, Charlie Parker is hired by the suitor of one of the aforenamed women to investigate an ex-con named Raum Buker and former lover of both sisters who has returned to town and may be causing trouble for one or both of them。 Unbeknownst to any of them, Buker brings major baggage with him, as a ruthless collector of coins and antique esoteric items is after those who stole a rare and powerful artifact of a coin from him, Buker being one of those who robbed him。 I had originally read this story in 2020 when Connolly posted it in weekly chapters during the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic, so I was prepared to speed-read my way through it, just because I couldn't recall the details。 However, in re-reading it, the story felt mostly new to me, as I only found myself recalling bits and pieces of it。 As it turns out, Connolly states at the end of the book that he revised and expanded the story greatly from its original format, so that helps explain why I remembered so little, and made it an enjoyable read for me。The title story is set during the early stages of the pandemic, and with an unpredictable near future and a heavy load already, Parker attempts to turn down new business。 But he is persuaded to take on two new clients。 The first is the widow of a former Mafia guy who has moved to Maine to make a new life for herself。 Two goons steal precious reminders of her dead daughter from her and try to blackmail her into paying them large sums of money, as rumors have always followed that she still has money her husband pilfered from the Mob。 As Parker tried to track down these men while carefully negotiating his way among their Mob connections a ghostly presence is also following the goons。 For the other client, a woman begs Parker to save her daughter from an abusive relationship, as she fears the drug addict boyfriend is getting dangerously close to graduating from mildly hurting her daughter to finally killing her。 Parker calls in Angel and Louis and the Fulci brothers to aid him in trying to free her。Both stories were solid, enjoyable Parker tales, and proved that Connolly can write a complex, immersive, full story without taking 500+ pages to do it like he has been with the previous novels。 。。。more

Always looking forward to reading those books about Charlie Parker。 Is Charlie a good man? In essence, he is, but some might say he's a scoundrel, not to be trusted。 He has a profound sense of what is right, of justice, a kind man who can be tough when needed。 Just read those books, and spend some time in another era, one in which there still is honor and kindness。 You won't regret it。 Always looking forward to reading those books about Charlie Parker。 Is Charlie a good man? John Connolly writes so well that there is sly humor within his descriptions of individuals bent on reckless danger。 THE FURIES is his newest collection of Charlie Parker tales and the erstwhile protagonist is in fine form。 Atmosphere, personalities and long-simmering misgivings are the main characters in most of these tales and appear in fine form here。 For fans of the author and Charlie Parker, this book is a real gift。 I received my copy from the publisher through edelweiss。

John Connolly, much like Dean Koontz, writes a great character driven story。 And like Koontz, the plots are a bit thin。 That said, I love reading both。 Connolly loves to describe the details of each character, main and side, in a way that keeps you reading and fascinated。 "The Furies" is a great example of his style。If you have not read his prior work, skip this one and go to book 1, "Every Dead Thing"。 If you already are a fan, you won't be disappointed in this one。 John Connolly, much like Dean Koontz, writes a great character driven story。 And like Koontz, the plots are a bit thin。 That said, I love reading both。 Connolly loves to describe the details of each character, main and side, in a way that keeps you reading and fascinated。 "The Furies" is a great example of his style。If you have not read his prior work, skip this one and go to book 1, "Every Dead Thing"。 If you already are a fan, you won't be disappointed in this one。 。。。more

I wasn't the biggest fan of the 19th in the series, so I was pleased to find this 20th Charlie Parker story great! Well, that was interesting。 Two books in one。 They were both good。 I find it novel that the chapters are only one to a few pages long。 The book reads fast, partly because I want to find out what happens next and partly because it’s easy to say one more chapter when they are so short。

The latest in the Charlie Parker thrillers。 Actually, two short novels in one featuring women who have been robbed of their dignity and their need to reach out for unorthodox help。 The endings are not clear cut because of the misogyny inherent in our society, but retribution is sort。

One of the greatest joys in my life is when a new Charlie Parker books comes out。 I've enjoyed the last two books, as always, but I really feel like this one puts us firmly back into Parker's world along with all that that entails。 This book consists of two novellas, the first being more of a short novel is The Sisters Strange。 Firmly in the "mystery" camp, this was a fun story with some humor, and more than its fair share of darkness。 It also featured an extremely creepy villain named Kepler。Th One of the greatest joys in my life is when a new Charlie Parker books comes out。 I've enjoyed the last two books, as always, but I really feel like this one puts us firmly back into Parker's world along with all that that entails。 This book consists of two novellas, the first being more of a short novel is The Sisters Strange。 Firmly in the "mystery" camp, this was a fun story with some humor, and more than its fair share of darkness。 It also featured an extremely creepy villain named Kepler。The second novella The Furies was the type of Parker story I've come to love。 Parker is always trying to navigate through the world of being a private investigator, working within the legal system, and all the while dealing with the reality of his daughter's ghost and other things not of this world。 Angel and Louis feature in this one as well as some dealings with the New England mafia。 (Some of these portions were extra fun for me because Springfield, MA is my home town and I've eaten at a few of the places mentioned here, like Frigo's and La Fiorentina Bakery。 That type of thing always gives me a bit of a thrill。) In summary, this was such a lovely visit with all of my old friends, even though the overall story arc did not progress very much。 That is fine with me, because in my heart of hearts, I know this series is winding down and both my soul and my heart are worried about what will eventually happen where Charlie, Angel and Louis are concerned。 I love them all so much, but I am concerned that we will soon have to part。 Until then, I thoroughly enjoyed this latest installment and will eagerly be awaiting the next!*Thank you to Atria books and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest feedback。 This is it!* 。。。more

I've been reading the Charlie Parker novels for so long now and have invested so much of my time and imagination in them that I'm sure there's a section of that great big filing cabinet that is my brain that's dedicated to my ventures into that world, in all its strange, dangerous and eerie fabulousness。 There is a comfortable familiarity upon revisiting Charlie, Angel and Louis, the Fulci brothers and Portland, Maine even though so much of the story is weird, wonderful, unsettling and strange。T I've been reading the Charlie Parker novels for so long now and have invested so much of my time and imagination in them that I'm sure there's a section of that great big filing cabinet that is my brain that's dedicated to my ventures into that world, in all its strange, dangerous and eerie fabulousness。 There is a comfortable familiarity upon revisiting Charlie, Angel and Louis, the Fulci brothers and Portland, Maine even though so much of the story is weird, wonderful, unsettling and strange。This book is a two-in-one deal。 The link between both stories is a motel described in the book as:"The Braycott Arms was a stain on the character of the city of Portland, a blight on its inhabitants, and a repository for criminality, both aggressively active and relatively passive, the latter frequently due only to the temporary requirements of a parole board。 "The first story, The Sisters Strange sees our favourite private detective hired by a friend of Dolors Strange to look into the dealings of Raum Buker who has entangled himself in a world of trouble and risks dragging Dolors and her sister Ambar down with him。 Ancient coins, stolen from the wrong - very wrong - person means Buker is being pursued by Mr Kepler, who he stole the coins from。 Kepler is single minded in wanting, even NEEDING, to get his coins back and is a man who I imagine leaves a barely visible but definitely odorous trail in his wake, much like the common garden snail。 The second book, The Furies, sees Charlie working two cases simultaneously, both involving women under threat。 Sarah Abelli is being blackmailed by two men, Pantuff and Veale, who have stolen a box of keepsakes of her deceased daughter。 Neither man has a moral fibre in his body, these are intensely disturbed and dangerous men but even they may regret what their actions have brought upon themselves。 The other case is more of the kind of bread and butter case I imagine Charlie spends his time on in between the high risk ventures usually featured in the novels。 Melissa Thombs is a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of Donnie Packard and her mother is becoming increasingly concerned that he is going to kill her。 Too terrified to just leave him and with him watching her every move and limiting her contact with anyone but him, can Charlie get her away from her abuser before he becomes her killer? Twenty books in and this series shows no sign of slowing down or fading, which I'm immensely thankful for。 I'm not sure I'll ever be quite ready to say goodbye to Charlie Parker but I can at least hope it's not for a long time and many more books to come。 。。。more
